Mt Kosciuszko day trip

This was a day trip I did in November 2007.

The NSW snowy mountains are a beautiful area at anytime of year. There are so many areas to discover.

You can walk to the top of Mt Kosciuszko from either Charlottes pass or from Thredbo. Thredbo is the easier and shorter route at just over 6km each way as you catch the chairlift to the top of the ski field and walk from there.

From Charlottes pass following the main track up and back is a little over 9km each way. Or from this direction you can follow the main range walking track to Blue lake lookout and back to Charlottes pass from there. This circuit is about 22km.

This time however I decided to walk up from Charlottes pass and then ski down from the top and around the southern side of mount Clarke back to the river crossing on the Blue lake track.

It was a nice morning although a little harder than normal carrying my ski gear. The below photo was taken from the bridge crossing the Snowy river part way along the track.

Not long before I did this day trip we had had dust storms over a lot of the east coast which left a layer of dust on everything as evident by the colour of the snow.

A rest at Seamans hut and a couple of photos before heading the rest of the way to the top.

Having my skis on my back did get a few looks from other hikers being mid November but although there wasn’t complete snow cover the snow drifts still looked big enough to ski down most of the way although not following the track down.

By the time I decided to set off downhill, the clouds had come over making it a lot cooler. The snow wasn’t great but still fun and an achievement for me to ski off the highest point in Australia.

Following the slope down north and then around the side of Mt Clarke I managed to ski almost all the way back down to the Snowy river about 1km south of the Blue Lake track crossing.

Reaching the crossing I hadn’t thought about the river level with the amount of snow still around. Usually you can cross on the stepping stones almost all the way across, however this day the river was waist deep and freezing.

deeper than it looks

The only 2 options I had was to wade across or hike all the way back up to the bridge and cross there which would have taken a few hours with no track directly there from the western side of the river.

I decided to wade across as thankfully once across it is only a short walk up to the car park. I stripped off to shirt, underwear and shoes and slowly made my way across. I was shaking violently from the cold by the time I reached the other side (thank god I had dry pants to put back on).

As soon as I got back to the car I got the heater blasting to warm up.

It was overall a fun adventure that I have never forgotten.
